LETTER FROM JUNIOR SUNDAY LEAGUE
Over the past few weeks a number of incidents have been reported to this League concerning the behaviour of Managers other club Officials,Parents and supporters. whilst this is not a forum debate the rights and wrongs of each individual case or indeed to name and shame individuals or their Clubs, it is right and proper that we raise the matter of behavior, and discuss what is happening increasingly in this area of childrens sport.
A a League Committee we have heard of people who do not just disagree with a referees decision, they shout abuse across the pitch, threaten and, thankfully rarely, physically attack the match official. Under no circumstances do we condone this type of behaviour and we must make it clear we will take the most severe course of action possible
under the rules with such persons found guilty.
So whats gone wrong? If we sit back after a game and think what as happened, we generally accept that over a season just as many decisions will go with you as against. Unfortunatly we are all biased in favour of our own team and therefore we do not see the tackle or an offside decision from the perspective of a neutral spectator. Incidents, which are in truth, our teams fault, we naturally believe to be 50/50 and therefore expect the match official to give us the benefit of doubt, which he will not. True 50/50 incidents, we believe to be 60/40 in our favour. and therefore expect every decision to go our way. The result, we see the match official as biased against our side, and some people allow the resulting frustration to spillover into inappropriate behaviour. Worse still, our frustrations, even anger lead us to incite the players into dissent, this in turn causes the match official more problems, which will inevitably lead to players being cautioned or even sent off.
So what can be done?Well, the most obvious thing is for all concerned to bite their tongue and remember this is junior football, in other words it is for the children not adults.Whilst we recognise this is not a solution in itself,we as a League are committed to stamping out incidents of poor behaviour amongst players and spectators,We urge all Clubs to discuss this issue and to actively encourage sensible discussion of the points contained in this letter. The League is looking at various initiatives involved in curbing inappropriate behaviour, including compelling all Clubs to rope off the pitch, indeed it as been suggested by certain quarters, that all spectators be banned from the touchline According to the FA each Club is responsible for the behaviour of its own players, officials and spectators, and therefore they should be telling everyone within their Club what is acceptable behaviour, and banning those incapable of keepingwithin their code of conduct. In any event we must change the behaviour of the few, in order to increase the enjoyment of the majority, and if this League has to place bans on those who seek to threaten and abuse players, officials and spectators, then that is what will have to happen.
